About Dr. Spielberg

Dr. Leigh Spielberg grew up on Long Island, New York. He graduated with a degree in history from Yale University in 2001. He then moved to Belgium to study medicine at the Brussels University and the University of Leuven.

After medical school, Dr. Spielberg completed 2 years of retina research at the New York Eye & Ear Infirmary and at the University of Leuven. His research produced 18 publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Dr. Spielberg did his ophthalmology training and vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at the Rotterdam Eye Hospital. He then worked as a full-time vitreo-retinal surgery staff member at Gent University Hospital for three years. 

Since 2019, Dr. Spielberg has worked in at the Sint-Jan Hospital in Bruges and the Sint-Lucas Hospital in Ghent. His specialties include the treatment of retinal detachments, macular pathologies (puckers, macular holes, submacular hemorrhages), vitreous hemorrhages, diabetic retinopathy, trauma, complications after cataract surgery and secondary lens implantation.
